FPGA Technology in Detail

FPGA technology in detail

FPGAs are chips, which are programmed by the customer to perform the desired functionality. The chips may be programmed either

once: Antifuse technology, e.g. devices manufactured by Quicklogic

several times: Flash based, e.g. devices manufactures by Actel

dynamically: SRAM based, e.g. devices manufactured by Actel, Altera, Atmel, Cypress, Lucent, Xilinx

Each technology has its own advantages, which shall be discussed only very briefly:

    Antifuse FPGAs:

devices are configured by burning a set of fuses. Once the chip is configured, it cannot be altered any more.

bug fixes and updates possible for new PCBs, but hardly for already manufactured boards.

ASIC replacement for small volumes.

Flash FPGAs:

devices may be re-programmed several thousand times and are non-volatile, i.e. keep their configuration after power-off

with only marginal additional effort, the chips may be updated in the field expensive

re-configuration takes several seconds

SRAM FPGAs:

currently the dominating technology unlimited re-programming

additional circuitry is required to load the configuration into the FPGA after power-on

re-configuration is very fast, some devices allow even partial re-configuration during operation

allows new approaches and applications- buzzword reconfigurable computing, e.g. a circuit, that searches for a specific

DNA pattern, or a mobile phone that downloads the latest protocol update

Japan Reconstruction May Take 5 Yrs: World Bank

Japan may need five years to rebuild from the catastrophic earthquake
and tsunami that has caused up to $ 235 billion of damage, the World
Bank said on Monday.

The March 11 disaster which ravaged northeastern Japan will likely
shave up to 0.5 percentage point from the country's economic growth
this year, the bank said in a report. The impact will be concentrated
in the first half of the year, it said.

"Damage to housing and infrastructure has been unprecedented," the
World Bank said. "Growth should pick up though in subsequent quarters
as reconstruction efforts, which could last five years, accelerate."

Japan reconstruction may take 5 yrs: World Bank

The bank cited damage estimates between $ 123 billion and $ 235
billion, and cost to private insurers of between $ 14 billion and $ 33
billion. It said the government will spend $ 12 billion on
reconstruction in the current national budget and "much more" in the
next one.

It said a crippled nuclear power station in the northeast that
authorities are racing to regain control of is an unfolding situation
that poses uncertainties and challenges.

Traces of radiation first detected in spinach and milk from farms near
the nuclear plant are turning up farther away in tap water, rain and
even dust. In all cases, the government said the radiation levels were
too small to pose an immediate risk to health.

A short-term drop in Japan's consumer demand and manufacturing
production will also hurt trade with regional neighbours, the bank
said. South Korean electronics companies have seen the price of some
memory chips from Japan rise 20 percent because of disrupted
production, while Thai car exporters may run out of Japanese auto
parts next month, it said.

"Disruption to production networks, especially in automotive and
electronics industries, could continue to pose problems," the bank
said. "Japan is a major producer of parts, components and capital
goods which supply East Asia's production chains."

Japan's northeast, the epicentre of the disaster, is home to ports,
steel mills, oil refineries, nuclear power plants and manufacturers of
auto and electronics components. Many of those facilities have been
damaged, while nationwide power shortages have severely crimped auto
and electronics production.

Install NS-2 on Ubuntu 9.04

I'm doing my final year project on Wireless Ad-Hoc networks and was required to Install NS-2 (Network Simulator) on Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope. I thought it would be easy to install NS-2, using the shell script file "Install", but it didn't work and failed. I tried many tricks and searched the web, but didn't find a good tutorial for the same, and thought to write one.

The procedure for installing NS-2 in Ubuntu 9.04
1. Download ns-allinone-2.33.tar from here.
2. Place it in somewhere, e.g. /home/programmer, then extract it.
$ cd /home/programmer
$ tar -xvf ns-allinone-2.33.tar

3. Download & install some packages from repository
$ sudo apt-get install build-essential autoconf automake libxmu-dev

4. Install the ns2
$ cd ns-allinone-2.33
$ ./install

5. Edit some paths
$ gedit ~/.bashrc

Put these lines on that file. Off course, you might change /home/programmer for it depends on where you extract ns-allinone-2.33.tar.
# LD_LIBRARY_PATH
OTCL_LIB=/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/otcl-1.13
NS2_LIB=/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/lib
X11_LIB=/usr/X11R6/lib
USR_LOCAL_LIB=/usr/local/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$OTCL_LIB:$NS2_LIB
:$X11_LIB:$USR_LOCAL_LIB

# TCL_LIBRARY
TCL_LIB=/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/tcl8.4.18/library
USR_LIB=/usr/lib
export TCL_LIBRARY=$TCL_LIB:$USR_LIB

# PATH
XGRAPH=/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/bin:/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/tcl8.4.18/unix:/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/tk8.4.18/unix:/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/xgraph-12.1/
NS=/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/ns-2.33/
NAM=/home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/nam-1.13/
export PATH=$PATH:$XGRAPH:$NS:$NAM

6. Validate it (take very long time compare to install process)
$ cd ns-2.33
$ ./validate

7. (Optionally) Create a symlink, so that ns can be called from everywhere
$ sudo ln -s /home/programmer/ns-allinone-2.33/ns-2.33/ns /usr/bin/ns

8. Let it take effect immediately
$ source ~/.bashrc

9. Try to run it (and pray :) )
$ ns

10. If the installation success, you will see % at the command prompt. Type following command to exit
% exit

Testing ns2 Installation

Use the following ns batch command

set ns [new Simulator]
$ns at 1 "puts \"Hello World!\""
$ns at 1.5 "exit"
$ns run

Then,

1. Copy the commands above and paste in the text editor
2. Save the file as simple.tcl
3. Type command in command prompt
$ ns simple.tcl

4. It will show
Hello World in the line below

TroubleShooting

1. Problem : The system cannot find Tcl or it tells that Tcl does not install correctly

Solution 1 : Check your ns tcl nam ... version, check folder name. If it is not correct, edit the .bashrc
Solution 2 : run ./install again

2. Problem : nam does not work

Solution 1 : In fact, you need to change that particular file in your Linux manually.

Here is what you should do.

Embedded Operating Systems and Linux

What is an Embedded OS

  • An "embedded system" is any computer system or computing device that performs a dedicated function or is designed for use with a specific embedded software application.
  • Embedded systems may use a ROM-based operating system or they may use a disk-based system, like a PC. But an embedded system is not usable as a commercially viable substitute for general purpose computers or devices.

The Real-Time Operating System uCOS-II

  • μC/OS-II is a highly portable, ROMable, very scalable,preemptive real-time, deterministic, multitasking kernel
  • It can manage up to 64 tasks (56 user tasks available)
  • It has connectivity with μC/GUI and μC/FS (GUI and File Systems for μC/OS-II)
  • It is ported to more than 100 microprocessors and microcontrollers
  • It is simple to use and simple to implement but very effective compared to the price/performance ratio.
  • It supports all type of processors from 8-bit to 64-bit

G4L - Ghost for Linux

G4L is a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool. The created images are optionally compressed, and they can be stored on a local hard drive or transferred to an anonymous FTP server. A drive can be cloned using the "Click'n'Clone" function. G4L supports file splitting if the local filesystem does not support writing files larger than 2GB. The included kernel supports ATA, serial-ATA, and SCSI drives. Common network cards are supported. It is packaged as a bootable CD image with an ncurses GUI for easy use.

You must have heard about Norton Ghost, which makes a snapshot of a hard disk allowing you to restore your system in case of a crash. However, Norton Ghost is a commercial tool that costs a lot of money. 'Ghost for Linux' is a free and open source equivalent of this tool. It allows you to create your disk image either on a different hard disk or via FTP on another machine.

This is a mini-distro of Linux and its kernel includes support for Parallel ATA and Serial ATA IDE drives. In our environment, we were not able to use it with SCSI drives. It comes with support for most common network cards.

Usage
It runs from a bootable CD and gives you a simple menu-based interface to navigate. We have given an ISO image of this distro on this month's PCQEssential CD. You may use Nero or other CD burning software to transfer this to a CD.

Before booting with it, make sure you have a secondary hard disk installed on the machine you want to ghost, with either Windows or Linux partitions. The tool creates an image of the active Linux partitions on the second hard disk. Now to use this tool, just boot your PC or server with the CD you created. At the login prompt, give the username as 'g4l' and execute the following command.
